Beer Trip: Allagash Brewing Company | Portland, Maine

We’ve been to Allagash twice now - once in the summer of 2018 and again in the fall of 2021. Neither time disappointed!

Check out those tanks!

The Brewery

Everything about Allagash has a nice outdoor feel with a natural wood façade and big trees to sit beneath. There are tons of tables spread all around the building which offers plenty of seating options.

The brewery views itself are neat - you can see the huge tanks and smaller buildings where the wild ales take time to ferment.

As far as an atmosphere goes, Allagash is an outdoor lover’s dream. In addition to great beer, there are many yard games to choose from to play with friends.

The brewery does a great job of creating covered spaces in the cooler months.

The Beer

Allagash White - their flagship.

Allagash had a wide variety of beers to choose from with roughly a dozen offerings. In true Maine fashion, a good majority of their options have names inspired by the Great Outdoors, including the “River Trip” and “North Sky.” Their choices are spread among many different styles, ranging from IPAs, stouts, Belgium style, and our personal favorite here - wild ales.

Cheers to Allagash White!

The quality of beer here is exceptional, especially with them being such a large production. The original Allagash White has a perfect mix of spices and is fantastic to enjoy right at the source (unfortunately we can’t get it in Kansas yet)! Many of their beers utilize heavy spices, yet they have a unique way of preventing them from becoming overpowering. We both had high ABV options of different styles (stout and pumpkin) but found them to be smooth and easy to drink.

Food, Staff, & Merch

Food trucks are abundant here, with three different trucks rotating daily. Their staff is very friendly and offer great suggestions for their beer options (shoutout to Sam from Kansas for making our first Allagash experience so great). Allagash has fun merchandise; however do not provide a lot of different options. They do offer a take home 6-pack with six different standard offerings from them which we thought was a neat idea if you’re not sure how to best mix and match.

Tour

Taking the guided tour - headset, goggles, and all!

Although the tour is currently unavailable due to COVID-19, we took the guided tour during our visit in 2018 and it was second to none. They handed out headsets to everyone, greatly helping the communication between guide and guests in an otherwise noisy facility. Nearly the entire “campus” was seen on the tour - the brewing process, their barrel storage space, and finishing at packaging - all the while sampling their beer along the way.

Smaller building from the original facility where wild ales are fermented

Allagash is, hands down, one of our favorite breweries we’ve visited nationwide. The beer, outdoor atmosphere, and staff are all some of the best we’ve experienced. If this isn’t yet on your list, be sure to make a stop if you’re in the northeast.

Cheers!

Chris & Morgan
