Beer Trip: Discourse Brewing in Overland Park, Kansas
View of Discourse in the “Windmill” shopping center
Nothing makes us happier than a new brewery opening up close to our home! While Discourse Brewing has been open for several months, we finally got the chance to check them out. Based on the crowd during our visit, this place seems like it’s quickly become a hot spot for happy hour patrons. Offering a lively atmosphere and great beer, what more could you ask for?
The Brewery
The place was absolutely packed on a Friday afternoon!
Discourse is located within a small shopping center with a small, dog-friendly outdoor seating area in the front. Their indoor space has tall, vaulted ceilings with tons of natural light that make the white walls with hints of blue accents really pop. There are roughly a dozen tables, but these fill up very quickly - especially during happy hour - so you’re best to either get there early or be prepared to wait for a seat. It might be slightly quirky, but we liked how all of the chairs in the space were different from one another, and also enjoyed looking at their back wall covered with hundreds of brewery stickers.

The overall vibe was giving “coastal living room” in the best way possible. While it didn’t seem like they needed an event to bring people through the door, they do host multiple events throughout the week, with their staples being Grooves and Brews (live music) on Mondays and trivia on Wednesdays.

The Beer

Discourse constantly keeps 10 to 12 different beers on tap. They do things a little differently than most KC breweries by constantly rotating their offerings. While they occasionally will bring back a favorite recipe, they pride themselves in bringing brand new beer to the people. The drinks themselves change, but the brewers like to maintain beer styles consisting of sours, stouts, New England-style IPAs, and west coast IPAs. During our visit, they had 7 IPAs, a couple of stouts, a sour, wheat, and a smoked lager on tap.
By rotating beers but maintaining the style, Discourse has been able to tweak recipes along the way to produce some top-notch stuff. Based on our experience, we felt they rival any place in town for quality of beer. One worth mentioning was the Yelling at a Concert New England IPA. This one is brewed with a mix of Citra, Mosaic, and Belma hops, creating a rich citrus taste that lingers in your mouth. Their Suitcase of Mystery was another solid choice. This sour ale was almost like a smoothie with how thick it was, and it had the perfect blend of plum mixed in to provide a fruity mouth coating.

In addition to their beer on tap, Discourse has a canned only brew called Alberto and Ollie. This special beer is named after their rescue cat and dog, who have both passed away. A portion of every Alberto and Ollie sale goes to the local SPCA chapter, which helps care for and find forever homes for sheltered pets.
To-go beers aplenty
Food, Merch, & More
Merchandise section
Discourse doesn’t have a full kitchen, but it does serve pretzels and locally made gourmet popcorn from Popculture. You will also find the occasional food vendor, which sets up just inside their brewing area, allowing you to walk right up. We highly recommend the beer, but you can also purchase cider, single-serve wine, canned cocktails, or some N/A beer. They have one of the best logos in all of KC, giving off an Alice in Wonderland vibe. This makes their merchandise rather appealing, as they offer shirts, hats, glassware, and to-go beer of almost everything on the menu.
We constantly get asked what some of our favorite breweries are in the KC area, and Discourse will certainly start to come up during these discussions. With top-notch brews and a lively facility, this is one stop we’ll be hitting much more frequently.
Cheers!
