Beer Trip: Double Shift Brewing Company in Kansas City, Missouri
Located right in the heart of Kansas City’s Crossroads district (or “Brewer’s Alley” as it’s sometimes called) is Double Shift Brewing Company. This place is one of our favorites in town with its friendly staff, fun atmosphere, and great beer.
We’ve visited on a few occasions, but recently enjoyed an afternoon visit while out celebrating our anniversary.
The Brewery
Double Shift resides in an old tire or automotive repair shop and you still get that vibe walking inside, with garage doors in place and black ceilings with white walls. The place isn’t all that big and can get pretty full inside, but we haven’t ever had an issue finding a place to sit (lucky, I guess)! If all tables are taken or the weather is nice, they do offer a small outdoor patio space where you can watch the hustle and bustle of the brewery district.
The true gem of this brewery seems to be the people (based on our experiences and those of others). Their staff is always willing to talk beer, ask how things are going, and somehow still manages to keep the drinks flowing for everyone.
The Beer
We see more and more breweries continually rotating their beer options and not offering any mainstays - Double Shift falls into this group, so you will always find something new hire among their twelve different taps. During our most recent visit, seven of their options were varying styles of IPA, along with a couple of sours, a pilsner, an Irish red, and a barley wine. They typically maintain at least one aged option at any given time and have a cool board showing what they currently have in barrels, as well as where the barrel previously came from.
By constantly rotating their drinks, the brewers can have a lot more freedom to experiment with hops, malts, and fruits with minimal fear of messing something up. They do a great job of this by pushing the flavor envelope. We would love to be able to tell you to try a specific beer, but chances are that it will already be gone by the time you’re reading this! With that said, our favorites from our visit were the milkshake IPA (The Green Milk Cooler) and the fruited lager (The Back Alley Black). Double Shift has some of the best beer in all of the Crossroads, so you won’t go wrong with whatever you decide on.
Food, Merch, & More
There are tons of food options located around Double Shift (some of our favorites are Grinders or Mission Taco Joint!), but they do not have their own kitchen. They do, however, have cookies and pretzels available for purchase (which seemed to be rather popular - nearly every table had some pretzels to munch on)!
For the non-beer drinkers, there is cider and sangria, along with hot tea or coffee. Due to their limited space, their merchandise can be overlooked - but it does consist of some nice shirt and tank choices, coffee mugs, and a water bottle. Lucky for us they also had stickers and beer to-go options! We selected a brew to take home - Missouri Loves Company, a Key Lime Pie Milkshake IPA!
