Beer Trip: Dual Citizen Brewing Company in St. Paul, Minnesota

With each visit to the Twin Cities, we become even more impressed with its craft beer scene. All across Minneapolis and St. Paul sit unique stops to wet your whistle. These split cities just so happen to be the namesake of this week’s Beer Trip, Dual Citizen Brewing Company, as it sits near the border of the two.

The Brewery

The atmosphere at Dual Citizen is quite lively, and the place features a retro feel with tons of natural light, abstract wall paintings, and live plants scattered about. The huge wraparound bar sits in the middle of the room, dividing the space roughly in half. The back portion features the brewing operations, while the front features tons of tables, chairs, and casual couch seating. One end of the room has an elevated stage that is frequently used, as this place loves to host! They have some of the more unique events we’ve encountered, such as monthly plant exchanges, yoga classes, and specialty game nights where they teach people how to play a new board game. In addition to a great indoor space, they have a nicely sized patio featuring two seating levels that could likely hold 50 people.

The Beer

You’ll find roughly 15 different brews on tap at Dual Citizen at any given time. We were told that 3 or 4 of those are flagship options, while the others rotate out until they are gone. During our visit, roughly half of the menu consisted of IPAs or pale ales, and the other half featured a stout, sour, Belgian white, and a Helles.

With our timeframe, we were able to try a few different offerings, and each one provided a positive experience for our taste buds. One beer of note was the RippleEffects hazy pale ale. This one provided a great grapefruit and citrus taste, and falls on the hoppier side of the spectrum. Another favorite of ours was their sour known as RubyShoes. This one pours red in color, which makes sense, seeing that it is brewed with raspberries. It has the perfect tartness to it and, combined with the fruitiness, makes it very refreshing.

Food, Merch, & More

Dual Citizen partners with a food truck almost every evening, and they have the perfect setup right off their outdoor patio. If that isn’t to your liking, they do have pretzels, snack mix, and cookies near the bar available for purchase. If you scout out merchandise as we do, this is one area where they’re a tad weak - their only items were shirts and stickers. They do, however, have a cooler full of many of their beer selections available in both 4-packs and crowlers.

Dual Citizen wasn’t really on our radar of top breweries in the Twin Cities, but this place certainly should be on yours. They have one of the better atmospheres around, and are a place everyone should check out!

Cheers!

Chris
