Beer Trip: Red Crow Brewing Company in Olathe, Kansas
With it being the closest brewery to our house, stopping at Red Crow here and there is a given for us. This place has one of the best atmospheres of Johnson County pubs, which makes it the perfect place to bring friends and family. We visited Red Crow back when they were located in Spring Hill, and it’s been super cool to see it grow with its move to Olathe a few years back.
The Brewery
As we already mentioned, the atmosphere here is fantastic. The building is an old automotive shop, which seems to transition nicely into a brewery from our various experiences - the glass garage doors remain and open up to the parking lot in front, as well as to a nice fenced-in patio area in the back.
Both the indoor and outdoor areas are large and we are always thankful for how much seating they have available. Red Crow has a rustic feel to it, with recycled pallet wood and corrugated tin used throughout the space. There’s a family feel to Red Crow too, as it seems there are always kids present and board games being played by patrons.
The Beer
Red Crow typically offers 6 - 8 beer choices, with the majority of them remaining on tap consistently as flagships and only 1 or 2 rotators. This bodes well for the people who like what they like, but doesn’t provide as much variety for those looking for something different at every visit. A few of their main options include an IPA, Blonde, Sour, and Porter. The coolest thing about their beer selection is that each one is named after one of the owners’ female family members. We felt this is a neat concept and would be quite the honor for the individual at hand!
Having visited quite a few times, we’ve been able to try all of their signature drafts at least once. One of our favorites here is the Elaine, which is a porter made with rye. This beer has a perfect roasty flavor, yet is still smooth and goes down easy. Another one of their highlights is their IPA, the Louise. While floral flavor isn’t one of our favorites, this one is well done and pairs nicely with its hops.
Food, Merch, & More
While Red Crow doesn’t serve food themselves, they do a great job of always having a food truck partner (and have the perfect spot behind their building for one)! Casual Foodie offers an insane amount of options, but Mexican was the name of the game for us on our most recent visit - we can always go for some good chips and queso!
In addition to serving beer, there are also soft drinks, N/A beer, wine, house made seltzers, and a few select cocktails including a margarita or even a ‘Beermosa,’ featuring their IPA. The merchandise selection at Red Crow is definitely above average and includes your typical shirts, hoodies, and glassware, but also includes blankets and some neat stocking caps.
If you’re looking for more than just a casual visit, Red Crow also hosts a ton of different events for visitors. From trivia to BINGO, there’s always something going on. Morgan even visited once for a beer and succulent planting event a couple of years back!
With a great atmosphere and ever-changing food selection, Red Crow is a normal watering hole for us. Hopefully you can add it to your list of destinations in the Olathe area.
Cheers!
