Beer Trip: Seventh Son Brewing in Columbus, Ohio
As you might imagine, Columbus has a large brewery scene with tons of spouts spread throughout the city. Only having one afternoon available, we hit the web to see what the locals recommended. Located not far from downtown Columbus, Seventh Son Brewing Company kept popping up in search after search. After our experience here, we certainly see why this was the case.
The Brewery
Driving by, one could easily miss this place, as it sits just off the road and the car-filled parking lot hides it somewhat. Once you walk up, however, you’ll see that this separation creates an awesome outdoor patio layout that feels secluded from the hustle and bustle of its surroundings. There are tons of picnic tables and lawn chairs scattered about, along with live plants everywhere you look. The indoor space ties perfectly into the patio via multiple overhead doors, all of which were open on this warm summer afternoon. This area features a 15-person bar that occupies most of the room, and is really the focal point of the entire place.
The real gem, though, is their upstairs sunroom! This space is huge, with over a dozen picnic tables, multiple lawn chair setups, additional live plants, and windows that overlook the brewing operations. The space truly feels like you’re in someone’s backyard in the nineties. We haven’t experienced anything like this in all of our brewery travels! As if all this wasn’t enough, they also have a brewery cat who happened to make a brief appearance during our stop.
The Beer
Seventh Son maintains roughly a dozen brews on tap at any given time. Only a couple of those are flagships, but many of them will get repeated throughout the year. During this visit, IPAs were the name of the game, taking up nearly half the board. They also had a brown, blonde, sour, and stout to boast as well. One thing to note is that a good chunk of their brews had an ABV of 7% or higher, which certainly altered our selections with only an afternoon available and a car to drive.
With so many IPAs, we elected to go with the flagship known as The Scientist. This one is super hoppy and has a slight floral taste, but didn’t really align with our taste buds. On the flipside, though, the English brown ale called Stone Fort was fantastic! It gives off great malts, a hint of coffee, and is really smooth and surprisingly refreshing for the warmer day that we had. The last one to mention is Rescued. We normally aren’t big fans of blonde ales, but this seemed to be a very popular choice among patrons, so we gave it a go. This beer is light, crisp, and has a nice apricot taste to it, making it one of the better brews of this style that we’ve had.
Food, Merch, & More
While the beer is what brought us to Seventh Son, they might also be known just as well among locals for their higher-end cocktail menu. They have a full bar and, during our visit, they were mixing and shaking just as much as they were pulling the beer tap. There isn’t a kitchen at the brewery, but they almost always have a food truck sitting at the edge of their patio - or you can try one of the few nearby restaurants. The merchandise section is located just off to the side of the bar and features tees, sweatshirts, hats, water bottles, and dog toys. They also have an extensive selection of 6-packs to go.
Seventh Son certainly lived up to the hype that people gave it online. This place was the perfect spot to spend a few hours and enjoy a few drinks. Be sure to pay them a visit if you find yourself in central Ohio.
