Beer Trip: Transport Brewery | Shawnee, Kansas
Although we are excited to highlight breweries nationwide throughout our blog, we thought that featuring a local haunt would be the perfect start - first up, Transport Brewery!
Transport has only been around for 3 years, but they have quickly made a name for themselves in the Kansas City metro - for good reason! Transport’s atmosphere attracts regulars and there is always an event happening or a food truck onsite. We find ourselves at Transport every couple of months for one reason or another and it’s always a great time.
The Beer
Transport does things a little differently with their beer offerings compared to most - they keep a few beers on tap continually as flagships, but also have a few other standard beers rotating in/out every few months. In addition to all of these, they also keep 2-3 on tap as rotators. For a brewery of their size (pretty small!), it’s impressive to walk in and see 10 different beers on draft. Transport does a great job of providing a wide variety of styles, typically including IPAs, stouts, and pale ales.
In addition to options, Transport’s beer flavor is typically solid. Their pale ales are rather hoppy and tend to have a higher ABV than their other beers. One of our favorites is the Squires Stout. Like all of their stouts, it is light and easy-drinking and the Squire has a nice roasty flavor. The most unique thing about the stouts offered at Transport is that they are all served in coffee mugs as opposed to a typical pint glass.
The Atmosphere
Transport is one of the closer breweries to our house, so naturally we end up here quite often. Located right in the middle of downtown Shawnee, the building itself is likely nearing 100 years old and has great historic features. Although Transport doesn’t have an official outdoor space, they do have a nice roll-up overhead door that they open during nice days where people can enjoy the weather. Walking into Transport there is a huge table meant for sharing, which brings people of all walks of life together.
Transport does a great job of hosting events, such as ‘Teacher Nights’ (offering a percentage off of beers for active educators!) and they also have a large annual Octoberfest. We even hosted Chris’s surprise 30th birthday party here, which was a huge success!
One of our favorite things about Transport that is also quite unique is that they are 100% dog-friendly. While most breweries claim to be dog-friendly, this typically only includes their patio; however, with Transport your pup is allowed anywhere inside - we love being able to take Barley here.
Food & Merch
Transport has fantastic collaborations with local food trucks, having one parked out front almost every night. Quite often they team up with the truck to provide a food item paired with one of their beers for a great price (i.e. two tacos + 1 beer for $10)! We’ve even had some of the food trucks offer Barley a treat.
The merchandise at Transport is fairly limited, but they do offer some clothing items, stickers, and their coffee mugs are a top seller.
