Beer Trip: Community Beer Co. in Dallas, Texas

We snuck away from Kansas City for a wedding in Dallas and decided to make a long weekend out of it to ensure there was plenty of time to check out breweries along the way! Our first stop when we got into town was Community Beer Co. Its location right off of I-35 made it very easy to access, which we discovered can be a challenge for other spots in the bustling DFW metroplex.

Awesome grain tank chandelier

You certainly won’t miss this place when stopping by, as it is huge and occupies a former ExxonMobil building. Walking in, you pass through the large outdoor seating area with chairs spaced out on both gravel lots and an elevated deck. Weather allowing, this seems like it would be the place to be. The indoor space is just as impressive, featuring large windows bringing in tons of natural light that highlights the bar in the back. The feature piece is a giant custom grain tank that hangs from the ceiling as a makeshift chandelier and comes from their original location - a neat nod to their roots.

Community Beer gets its namesake from its emphasis on giving back to the community and its slogan is “Beer for the greater good!” One way (of many!) that they do this is by hosting a permanent on-site pet adoption building in their patio area. The shelter brings animals to the brewery every weekend to help pets find their forever homes.

We happened to get spoiled on our trip here and got to meet Jamie, the owner, who told us all about their 11 years in operation and provided us with a guided tour (which is normally hosted on Saturdays). He has so much knowledge regarding the brewing process and product production - we had a blast picking his brain and taking a deeper dive into his brews. Thank you, Jamie!

Draft list during our visit!

We discovered that Dallas breweries pack their menus with tons of options, and Community Beer certainly didn’t disappoint with its whopping 24 choices! We were informed that most of their drafts rotate when they run out, but they always keep 4 or 5 flagships - including the Mosaic IPA, which “keeps the lights on” as they put it. During our visit, their selections ranged from IPAs, flavored golden ales, stouts, a bock, blonde, and four different N/A brews. In fact, their N/A lineup called Nada won a bronze medal at the 2022 Great American Beer Festival and was named the Best Non-Alcoholic Beer by the Food Network! We were able to try a couple of these and they were quite good - Morgan certainly could’ve appreciated having these in her arsenal during last year’s pregnancy.

A flight is a must with so many options to choose from!

Trying Nada on the brewery floor

Community Beer places a focus on quality as their brewers are highly educated in the art having studied in Europe. We aren’t sure how common this is, but they actually grow their own yeast in-house to maintain consistency. One of our favorite beers was the Strawberry Shortcake Ale. Strawberry can be a very tough ingredient to perfect as it often tastes syrupy or artificial, but this ale has figured out the science on this one with an exceptional blend of strawberry and vanilla. Another feature of Community Beer that we don’t often encounter is the flavoring of the rim of the glass for certain offerings. They utilized cinnamon sugar for the Snickerdoodle Ale and powdered sugar for the Funnel Cake Ale (which we thought were fun touches)! The Funnel Cake Ale is also a staple at the Texas State Fair.

Our lunch choices

In addition to serving great beer, Community Beer has a full kitchen. Their menu consists of countless appetizers, salads, burgers, macaroni and cheese, and more. We went with a buffalo chicken sandwich and a “Grown Up” grilled cheese. In addition to your typical lunch or dinner, they also offer a Sunday brunch each week.

Their merchandise selection featured shirts, a bicyclist jersey, dog collars, shirts for kiddos, and plenty of to-go beer that we took advantage of.

Community Beer provided us with an experience we won’t soon forget. Whether you pop in for a brew, a meal, or for one of their many special events, you must put this on your list to visit if you find yourself in Dallas.

Cheers!

Chris & Morgan
