Beer Trip: Tall Trellis Brew Co. in Olathe, Kansas

One of the closest breweries to our house is Tall Trellis Brew Co. located in Olathe. What began as a brewery/coffee shop combo in 2022 has now grown into a bustling brewery with weekly events and a loyal following. This place has one of the best atmospheres in all of Johnson County and is a stop we really ought to be making more frequently!

The Brewery

Views of the facility and two of its outdoor patios

Something that sets Tall Trellis apart from other area breweries is its large outdoor space that is unrivaled. Although the location is somewhat remote near some residential neighborhoods, there’s no missing it once you arrive. Tables and chairs are spread about the yard along with an elevated stage where they host live music throughout the warmer months. You will also notice the rope trellis surrounding the patio where they grow hops during the summer. We’ve never encountered this across all of our beer travels and thought it was super cool!

Additional views of the ever-busy outdoor area

The outdoor area flows nicely into the building with a nice, earthy feeling. Live plants and a painted green ceiling contrast the natural wood walls perfectly. Sleek leather bar stools line the bar, which runs the entire back wall offering lots of room (which is needed, because that’s where you order). The entire brewery was extremely kid-friendly and there were families everywhere on this sunny Saturday afternoon (including our own little Warren). With plenty of grassy space, it seemed easy to let your kiddos run around or throw the ball while you enjoyed a brew. In addition to bringing the kids, you can also bring your pup to this dog-friendly space. Another thing we found worth noting is that multiple areas of their brewery can be reserved for smaller groups, which seemed to be a popular option - there were 3 separate reservations taking place during our visit.

The Beer

The beer menu during our visit

There is a nice selection of beer offered at Tall Trellis, with 14 different ones on the menu. While IPAs are enjoyable, it was nice to see that they only occupied 2 taps (quite different than most other places). Their options included a wide range of styles including a pilsner, sour, Mexican lager, and oatmeal stout - just to name a few. During your visit, we recommend paying attention to the names of the beer - some are quite humorous like the Crisp Stapleton, Jessie James, and Snap Chaps Western IPA donning the board.

It can be hard to produce good, quality beer when experimenting with so many different styles. While everything didn’t necessarily float our boat, we can safely say that all the beers we tried were solid. One that really stood out was the Cruisin’ the Fe - which also happens to be one of their most popular. This hazy pale ale is one of the better ones we’ve had and offers a great citrus taste, with just the right amount of hops. A couple of others worth mentioning were the Fruitprints Blackberry Raspberry (sour) and the Power Chords (New England IPA).

Food, Merch, & More

Merchandise and to-go beer

While the beer is what brought us here, we were very surprised to see how many people were ordering some of their specialty cocktails or one of their wine selections. Their non-alcoholic menu was surprisingly robust as well featuring soda, juice, and tons of flavored lemonades. When Tall Trellis first opened they were both a brewery and a coffee shop (RIP to the coffee shop part!), so they’ve clearly had diverse offerings from the start.

In addition to drinks, they have a nice food selection as well - enough to satisfy your palette, but not be overwhelmed by options. Some of the seemingly most popular included soft pretzels (we tried and loved), mac ‘n cheese, flatbreads, quesadillas, and street tacos. They also have a small merchandise section including shirts, hats, glassware, and a solid sampling of to-go 4-packs of their beer.

Tall Trellis has so much to offer to anyone visiting. With a robust beer menu and fantastic outdoor space, this brewery is on our shortlist of places to bring friends and family when they visit.

Warren was a huge fan of his first ever soft pretzel

From October 2022 - they had great coffee offerings, too!
