Beer Trip: American Solera in Tulsa, Oklahoma

With only one evening to spend in Tulsa, of course, we had to find ourselves a brewery. It didn’t take much research for American Solera to rise to the top of the craft beer scene within the area. After our stop there, it was easy to see why.

The Brewery

It’s a bit hard to believe that American Solera’s facility wasn’t built specifically for a brewery, because this place is very thoughtfully laid out. Walking up, you see the long, narrow, turf-covered outdoor patio tucked in tight between the brewery and the neighboring building. They have rows upon rows of picnic tables and a few smaller tables and chair arrangements towards the back. The inside is broken up into a taproom side and a separate reservable space, with the kitchen and restrooms breaking the areas up. The main side has tons of various seating, from tables and chairs to couches or an 8-person bar. The entire place, from the patio to the inside, features plenty of pastel colors, making the space very memorable.

The Beer

American Solera has a nice lineup of 14 different beers on tap. Of that list, they keep about 5 brews as staples and then rotate out the rest of the menu. During this visit, the beer styles were heavy on the IPA side, but also included pilsners, sours, a brown, and a porter among others. One thing that’s a bit different here is that all brews are served as 12-ounce pours. While this might seem like a negative, we actually liked it because we were able to try one additional brew compared to normal while still safely being able to drive.

Even with so many taps, their brewers definitely don’t skimp on the quality of production here. Everything we tried was exceptional! Perhaps our favorite was the Mango Tango Boom Boom. This sour is brewed with lactose, making it very smooth with rich mango and coconut flavors. The perfection of their sours made sense, as we were informed that the owners actually started Prairie Artisan Ales over in Oklahoma City - another hot spot that churns out some of the better sours in the market. A couple of other brews to note were the Nü Castle, which is a nutty and sweet English brown ale, and their West Coast IPA known as Pipe.

Food, Merch, & More

You’ll find a limited food menu here, with chips and queso or salsa, as well as several smash burger options to choose from. If the kitchen isn’t open, they do have homemade seasoned pretzels in a bowl sized for 2 or 3 people. In addition to beer, they offer wine, cider, house-made seltzers, cocktails, and a few N/A beers. American Solera has one of the cleaner-looking merchandise sections we’ve come across in our brewery travels. There are shirts, hats, glassware, water bottles, and koozies, all perfectly aligned in organized cubbies. This is situated right by the to-go beer cooler, featuring nearly half the beers on the menu in 6-packs to take home.

Coming in not knowing a thing about the beer scene that Tulsa had to offer, we were blown away by American Solera. If the rest of the area’s breweries are like this, we’ll have to return to see more of what the city has to offer very soon.

Cheers!

Chris
