Beer Trip: East Forty Brewing in Blue Springs, Missouri

With the Kansas City area as our home, we always get excited when we discover a new brewery nearby. East Forty Brewing is a bit of a trip across the metro for us, but it was well worth the drive and made the perfect spot to venture for an afternoon date.

The gorgeous, spacious, shaded patio!

The Brewery

Walking up, you can’t miss East Forty’s incredible outdoor patio! There are tons of tables and chairs, with the best part being that the entirety is covered, creating shade that makes it usable on even the hottest of days. The inside area is equally spacious, highlighting a rustic barn feel, rolling doors, weathered wood features, and empty bags of malts hanging on the walls that resemble old feed sacks. The bar runs most of the length of the space, offering 15 seats, and is the place where everyone comes to order from. In a little nook near the front door, there are Skee-Ball and darts, and if you come on a Friday or Saturday evening, you’ll probably find live music playing on the small indoor stage.

Located behind the brewery is a separate, reservable space known as The Mill Room. There was a graduation event happening there during our visit, and it seemed to offer plenty of room for larger parties. Throughout our visit, there were plenty of people walking back and forth getting food or refreshing their beer.

The Beer

Before visiting a new spot, we typically research the website ahead of time and glance over the beer options to give us an idea of what to expect. We went rogue on our visit to East Forty and decided to visit on a whim, so when we first saw the menu, we were blown away by both the number of taps and how well things aligned with our taste buds. They keep a huge selection of 18 different beers available, 6 of those being flagships. They also have a few seasonal brews and then a rotating list as the keg runs dry. During our visit, the board featured IPAs, sours, lagers, some barrel-aged options, and several other one-offs. As far as we’re concerned, this was one of the best tap lists we’ve come across in the KC metro.

Having several hours to ourselves, we were able to sample a good portion of the menu and were happy with nearly everything that we tried. One of our favorites of the day was A Fistful of Pool Vibes. This sour is tart, yet fruity, and has just a tad of vanilla that cuts through, leaving a lingering taste on the tongue. Our top flagship brew was the Big Head Red. This is actually a rye beer with great malts and leans towards the sweeter side. The last brew of note was a seasonal called Maybee?. This one is an American IPA brewed with lavender. We certainly got a lot of floral taste, but it wasn’t overpowering to the point of tasting like soap - which can sometimes be the case with lavender brews.

Food, Merch, & More

Pretzels as an appetizer never miss

While the beer is what led us here, we were able to enjoy lunch as well since East Forty has a kitchen with a sizeable menu. You’ll find a variety of appetizers, including several with locally sourced pig options, soups and salads, mac n cheese, sandwiches, and homemade pizzas. In addition to serving beer, you can get one of their many ciders or seltzers, a glass of wine, or an N/A brew. The merchandise selection here features shirts, hats, glassware, a beanie, and water bottles. You can also get a lot of their beer available in 4-packs to take home.

Our sandwiches were delicious and came with chips

To go brews

East Forty far exceeded our expectations and is a place that both locals and visitors should check out. We’ll certainly be back to sample more of what they have to offer!

Cheers!
